I am currently in Santorini. Christina and Brian left on a ferry yesterday, and I am at a hostel with INTERNET! WOOO!!! I know, quite exciting.
After we experienced the craziness of Mykonos, we actually ended up sitting on the beach and watching the stars. It was a beautiful evening (aside from the drunk guys who were peeing in the ocean...). I saw a few shooting stars, and I wished that I had actually studied astronomy or something because it would have been neat to point out all the different constellations. I couldn't think of anything more perfect except to listen to the waves and watch the stars.
The next morning, we wanted to rent ATVs, but we couldn't because the ATV's at the beach were all rented out =( Instead, we laid out at the beach, which was much calmer than the day before (I believe it was because everyone was drunk/hungover and was asleep). We ended up heading into Mykonos town and wandered around. Mykonos town is absolutely beautiful. Winding streets, white houses with colorful trimmings, and the ocean sea breeze. We wandered through the winding streets, not knowing where to go and getting lost. We stumbled upon the windmills, Little Venice and then went to the shore to just sit on the edge and watch the sunset. It was probably one of the most spectacular sunsets I had ever seen. The colors were so bright and absolutely magnificent. I went on a little photo shoot and decided to take as many pictures as possible to capture all of the beauty of the place.
We ended up having dinner at a little restaurant on the water, eating "traditional" greek food. I don't even remember what we talked about, but it seems like each dinner last for hour, goes by pretty fast, and we ended up in conversations that I didn't even think we'd have. Brian said that he had never had more conversations about marriage, weddings and relationships in his life (he was with two girls afterall). In all fairness, he did bring up each one of those conversations. haha! Afterwards, we decided to go back to the beach, grab a bottle of wine, and drink along the crashing shores. On our bus ride back, there were plenty of drun people heaing to Cavo Paradiso, one of the biggest nightclubs on the beach. The girls were shouting Cavo! Cavo! Cavo Paradiso! It reminded me of being on a sorority invitational bus. It was another chill and relaxing evening for us.
The next morning, we got up early and took a bus into town to go to Ancient Delos, one of the most preserved sites. No one can actually stay overnight there. In Ancient times, it was the only trading center and money exchange place. The history there was overwhelming, and some of the things that were preserved there were also amazing-- the tiles, the columns, etc. It was definitely worth the morning visit. After we got back, we walked around town some more, decided to head back to the beach, and heading back into town. Since we were staying at the beach, it wasn't as convenient to get anywere. But luckily, the bus took us right into town and dropped us off right at the beach we were staying at. It's like the island was set up for tourists and travelers to get from town to each of the beaches. It was easy to get lost in town, but it was hard to get lost on the bus. You could only go to one place!
That evening, we decided to grab drinks and dance. Brian bought a shirt that said Mykonos 09. We said he didn't really earn that shirt unless we went out. So we ended up in a little bar with music and Christina and I ended up dancing. The cool thing about the place was that they actually played American music as well as a mix of all of the other types of music. It wasn't all techno! There was a Canadian guy who turned to us and said, "You must not be from here. You know the song!" which was true. Everytime an American song came on, Christina and I belted it out and sang to it. Everytime one of the other songs came on, everyone else did the same. We soon discovered that there were very few Americans traveling. All of the Americans that we had met were on the cruise ships.
When we got home to our camp site, there was a huge party going on at the club at our beach. It was insanity. We ended up going to bed around 5, and people were just arriving. Surprisingly, the three of us slept pretty well through all the music. When we got up the next morning to leave, it was once again, a ghost town.
People party hard on Mykonos. That's the moral of the story. But we seemed to find our peace on Mykonos with our wine on the beach, our small little town, Ancient Delos, and the magnificent sunset.
