High winds = strong possiblity of ferries being cancelled. Well, small ferries that is. The cyclades islands are probably the most beautiful islands in all of Greece, but has the strongest winds in all of Greece. There were days that were so incredibly windy, and others that were calm and sunny. We have gotten a little bit of all of that during our time here.
We checked out of our hostel and hung out around town, had some Gyros (OKAY, around noon, there was barely anything open... We had to walk for a little while until we found this cute little family run Gyro stand. The lady who helped us out had her wedding picture in the shop as well as her little daughter was running around-- soooo cute!), and just sat around and waited after we finished walking around. We went and checked in before our ferry was supposed to leave. It was indeed cancelled due to high winds. Luckily, we were able to get new tickets without any charge to make our way to Santorini. The bad part was that we had to walk from the Old Port to the New Port, which was about 4km (a little over 2 miles). We walked that whole way in the searing sun with all of our luggage.
I loved taking the ferries. The only thing that I have not liked is that there are no announcements or even a bulletin board to show us that ferries are cancelled, or that the ferry is delayed, or which ferry is going where. It makes it a lot harder to be organized and all we could really do is just wait. And wait... and wait...
When our ferry finally came, we ended up in nice seats and enjoyed a smooth ride with ice cream on our way to Santorini. The ferry ride into Santorini is absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. We were right in the middle of the Caldera. We found our hotel sign and ended up walking around town that evening. We watched another spectacular sunset, and I immediately fell in love with Santorini.
It truly is the place that we all dream of when we envision Greece.
